One of the five biggest cities in nearby Bosnia and Herzegovina, two and a half hours from Split, but still worth visiting. Because it transfers you to another culture – an Oriental one. Mostar is situated on the Neretva River.
The Old Bridge, commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most visited landmarks and is considered an exemplary piece of Islamic architecture in the Balkans. Savour the local food and drink, explore traditional stone buildings and their decorations, and stroll across ancient bridges for a close encounter with Muslim culture in Europe.
Usually, it takes 15 minutes, but at the peak of the season, it could be about 25 minutes.
Mostar is a multicultural community with no restrictions. All sorts of food are available. No dress codes.
You should try "ćevapčići s kajmakom" (little grilled minced meat sausages with cream), Turkish coffee, rakija (very strong domestic snaps made of plumb), and Oriental sweets like baklava (layers of thin dough filled with nuts and almonds, but with great variety of additional ingredients) .
Considering the two-and-a-half-hour drive from Split to Mostar, the departure is at 8 AM. Bosnia and Herzegovina is not an EU member, so it's necessary to carry a passport for border crossing. The time allotted for exploring the city with a local guide, taking photos, and enjoying oriental specialties is 3 hours. This excursion is typically combined with a visit to Počitelj (a medieval town) or Međugorje (a religious center). In the summer months, it is combined with a visit to Kravica waterfalls where swimming is possible. The total duration of the trip is 8 hours for Mostar alone or 11 hours in combination with one of the suggested additions.
